The Wonderful Great Blue Heron

The great blue heron is truly an amazing bird. Not only is it a magnificent sight to behold, but it is also an adaptable and resilient species. This bird can be found in wetlands, marshes, estuaries, rivers, and ponds across North America, and can often times be spotted in areas with human development.

The great blue heron is usually a greyish-blue color and stands 4-5 feet tall. Its long neck coiled and its long legs when standing make it quite a sight to look at. It has a wingspan of up to 6.6 feet, and they are also one of the few bird species that are able to fly in a V formation.

These herons are incredibly fast swimmers, and an interesting thing about them is that they often swim with their wings half-open, using them as hydrofoils to cut through the water. The sharp, dagger-like beak enables these birds to hunt, catching their prey with their quick reflexes.
